  • Step Three: Using the other free hand, twist the ratchet counterclockwise until the spindle presses the object firmly.
  • Step Four: Lastly, set the thimble lock to ensure the spindle is locked and won’t move in the process.

How to Read a Micrometer: A Complete Guide

Reading an Inch Micrometer

  • Step One:

The inch micrometer is designed with calibrations both on the sleeve and the spindle. The scale on the sleeve is measured in a one-hundred thousandth of an inch which is represented by 0.100 in decimal form.

Now, one turn of the thimble moves the spindle face away or towards the anvil at exactly 1/40” which is translated to 0.025”. This means that the distance between two shorter lines on the sleeves is 0.025 inches.

The thimble isn’t left out either. It also has its own calibration with each line representing one-thousandth of an inch or .001 in decimal form.

  • Step Two:

With that in mind, it’s now time to record your reading. Start by reading the whole number on the sleeve. Supposing its 5, then you’ll round it into one-hundred thousandth which will make it 500 thousandth or 0.500.

  • Step Three:

Next, count the number of lines that appear after the whole number, which in our case is 5. If the line is just 1, then multiple it by 0.025 (which is the distance between one line) to have something like 1 x 0.025” = 0.025”.

Lastly, record the corresponding marking on the thimble that’s at least underneath the line on the sleeve commonly known as the datum line. Let’s assume the reading was 28. Since the thimble represents one-thousandth of an inch, this reading will be read as 0.028.

  • Step Five:

So, by adding all these figures together, you’ll have 0.500 + 0.025 + 0.028 = 0.553 inches.

 

Reading a Metric Micrometer

  • Step One:

In this type of micrometer, there are two calibrations on the sleeve which are the top and bottom. The top calibration represents the millimeter reading while the bottom calibration represents half a millimeter reading.

The readings on the thimble go all the way to 50 with each line representing a hundredth of a millimeter which is 0.01mm in decimal form.

Now, to record your reading, you’ll start by reading the whole number first which in our case will be a 5.

Therefore, if you have some nylon, polyester, and polyurethane braids at your disposal, then this short guide will offer you a simple step-by-step procedure on how to make your own DIY kinetic recovery strap.

 

But First, What is a Kinetic Recovery Rope?

Kinetic recovery ropes come by many names. Some of the common names you’re likely to hear are snatch straps, recovery straps, yanker ropes, and kinetic straps. Kinetic recovery ropes are made of two layers of fabric. There’s the inner core that’s made of stretchy nylon fabric and there’s an outer layer that’s made of a nylon 66 polyamide.

The reason why the inner core is purely made of nylon is to give the recovery rope that stretchy characteristic that’s needed for recovering a vehicle. The outer layer, on the other hand, is double braided with polyamine then coated to give it tremendous strength to resist abrasion caused by the elements.

Besides being abrasion-resistant, this double-braided outer layer is also a bit stretchy meaning it doesn’t interfere with the stretchy characteristic of the rope. This outer sheath is basically one factor that sets kinetic recovery ropes apart from tow straps and traditional snatch straps.

Lastly, kinetic recovery ropes have loops that are very different from traditional snatch straps. You see, with traditional snatch straps, the loops are stitched. This creates potential failure points, which if not checked regularly, can break down and cause potential danger.

Now, when making your own homemade recovery strap, you can use a nylon fabric that’s similar to those used in making commercial-grade snatch straps or you can use standard paracord that’s normally used in making parachute suspension lines.

  • Step One:

The first step of making a kinetic recovery rope is to figure out which material you’ll be using. In my case, I will be using a parachute suspension line. Unfortunately, paracords are usually slender. For that reason, you’ll have to braid together several lines to increase the strength.

  • Step Two:

Once you’ve figured out which material you’ll be using, the next step is to determine the maximum tow weight for which the recovery rope will be pulling. Since a little mix up here can cause a disaster, you need to check a recovery strap chart for reference in case you’re in doubt.

  • Step Three:

With the chart at your disposal, it’s now time to determine the strength of a single paracord. As a rule of thumb, high-quality paracords are rated at 550 pounds. This means that 550 pounds are the breaking weight of each strand. Next, determine the length of the paracord line you’ll be using. The length can be determined by checking the weight of your vehicle then referring to a recovery strap chart to determine the length of the rope.

  • Step Four:

The last step in your preparation is to determine the number of paracord strands you’ll be braiding together to match the recommended strength that will safely recover your specific vehicle. Assuming you’re towing 10,000 pounds of load, you’ll need (10,000 ÷ 550 = 18.18). Rounding off this figure means that you’ll need 19 strands of paracords rated at 550 pounds.

  • Step Five:

Now that everything is ready, begin by knotting all the 19 strands on one end. Next, separate the strands into three groups two with 6 strands and one with 7. With the braids set, begin the braiding process by laying the left-hand group between the middle group and the right-hand group.

Next, pick the right-hand group and lay it between the new left-hand group and the middle group. Continue with the process until you’re through braiding the entire rope.

  • Step Six:

Now that the rope is entirely braided, the next step is to form a loop on both sides of the rope. This DIY technique is usually complex so you have to be very keen here. To begin, measure the size of the loop you’ll need. When you’re done, unravel the three main braids up to the point where you’ll have the eye. To avoid getting confused, tie each group with masking tape of a different color. So, you’ll have something like a red, blue, and black group depending on the colors you’ve chosen.

  • Step Seven:

Now that you’ve already measured the loop, curve the three braids to form a small circle or a loop. Hold the first braid and place it over the rope. Hold the second and place it over the rope but below the first braid. Hold the last braid and place it under the rope.

  • Step Eight:

Using some force, create an opening in between the rope and tuck stand 2 through that opening. Pull strand 2 to make it tight. Next, turn the rope over to find the link where strand 2 poked through. Remember, this is from underneath. Pock the hole and tuck strand 1 through the opening behind strand 2. Just as you did with strand 2, pull strand 1 away from the opening to make it tight.

Turn the rope over once more and try to locate the opening where strand 1 poked through. Poke an opening behind strand 1 and forcibly tuck strand 3. Pull it away from the opening to make it tight.

  • Step Nine:

Since this is just the first round, you’ll have to repeat step 8 until all the three strands are perfectly tucked in the rope. If you can remember, I had mentioned that one key advantage of kinetic recovery ropes over regular snatch straps is that the loops are spliced together rather than being stitched. This technique helps to reduce potential failure points thus improving efficiency.

What you may not have learned, however, is how to use the recovery strap to pull out a vehicle from a sticky situation such as mud, sand, or snow.

Thankfully, this guide has offered to walk you through a detailed step-by-step procedure on how to attach a recovery strap to recover a vehicle.

 

But First, What Should You Look For in a Recovery Strap?

  • Material Used:

When asked, most experts agreed that all recovery straps must be constricted from 100% nylon material. Any material besides nylon means that the strap is no longer a snatch strap but rather a static or tow strap. The reason why nylon is preferred is due to its stretchy characteristic that makes it ideal for such recovery procedures.

  • Stitch Quality:

Since the recovery process involves stretching the strap to its very limits, it must have tough consistent stitching that doesn’t have any weak points. Note that if there’s a weak point somewhere on the strap, then this can cause the strap to rapture rendering it useless in the middle of nowhere.

How to Attach the Strap

 

Step One: Access the Situation

With everything ready, start the recovery process by first inspecting the situation to determine the right course of action. You’ll need to inspect the wheels to see how deep they’re buried and check whether they can spin. Also, check whether there are any obstacles in the direction you’ll be recovering the vehicle and remove them immediately. This will help to create a clear path when recovering your vehicle.

Step Two: Locate the Tow Hitch

This is one of the most important steps that require maximum concentration. According to most veteran off-roaders, locating the tow hitch is normally a matter of life and death as failure to get the right spot can create a life-threatening situation that can be messy.

So, to locate the tow hitch, simply check beneath the vehicle. Make sure that you attach the loops of the recovery strap to the right hitch. Never attach the recovery strap on the bullbar, towball, towbar, or the factory-tow down points that are not appropriately rated for dynamic loads of a recovery situation.

Also, never connect the loops on any moving or suspension parts such as the axle, bumper, and steering rods as this can damage your vehicle once it’s jerked forward by the kinetic force of the recovery strap.

With that said, pick a D-ring and unscrew its pin. Next, pick your recovery strap and feed one end of the D-ring through the eyelet on the strap’s loop. This means that one end of the recovery strap is now attached to the D-ring.

Step Three: Connect Both Vehicles

With the D-ring already attached to the snatch strap’s loop, proceed to connect the D-ring to the right hatch on both vehicles. When you’re done, put the pins back to the D-rings and secure them with screws to ensure they’re tight. Also, make sure the recovery vehicle is driven close enough to the recovered vehicle depending on the length of the snatch strap.

Before you commence the recovery procedure, always make sure the pulling vehicle has the 4WD Low engaged. The reason for doing this is to boost the engine with more power to spin the tires. In the process, the pulling vehicle will have enough torque to pull a heavy load which in our case is to recover another vehicle.

 

How to Perform the Recovery

Step One: Add a Winch Damper

With everything ready, let’s now begin the recovery process. Start by wrapping the center of the recovery strap with a winch damper or blanket. This is a safety precaution that prevents the D-ring or any other metallic shackles from flying dangerously in case the recovery strap breaks. Also, the rest of the bystanders should move at a safe distance during the recovery process to prevent any unexpected accidents.

Step Two: Begin the Pull

Lastly, do not overdo the practicing. In most cases, I would recommend you to practice for about 25-30 minutes then take a break.
